Where La Verkin Is

La Verkin sits on the north bank of the Virgin River opposite Hurricane, about three miles south of Toquerville, on a bench between La Verkin Creek on the west and the Hurricane Fault on the east. State Route 9, the highway toward Zion National Park, runs through town and meets State Route 17 here.

History

Water came first: the La Verkin Fruit and Nursery Company, organized in 1889, built a canal with a tunnel through the limestone, and water first came through it in April 1891. The townsite was surveyed in 1898, the Gubler families and James Pectol settled with their families around 1898 to 1899, the post office came in 1903, and the town incorporated in 1927.

Neighborhoods and Homes

The older grid near Main Street and State Street keeps deep, orchard-era lots, while newer subdivisions sit on higher ground. Some subdivisions have no HOA, so rules differ from street to street.

Recreation

Confluence Park, a 344-acre park where the Virgin River, Ash Creek, and La Verkin Creek meet, is on the edge of town. The mineral springs in the Virgin River gorge below town, long known as Pah Tempe, have been closed to the public at the original site since 2013; a separate resort, Zion Canyon Hot Springs, opened above the canyon on July 15, 2025.

Schools

Washington County School District assigns schools by address, and Hurricane-area boundaries have shifted as new phases are built. Confirm the current elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school for a specific home with the district before you rely on it.
